Foucault's The Order of Things and its Relation to Architecture

1.0 Interpretation of Foucault’s the Order of Things

2.0 Knowledge and Knowledge Type

2.1.1 Comparing following subjects: theology vs. study of gods, mathematics vs. study of mathematics (quantity/structure/space/change), architecture vs. study of architecture

2.1.2 Discourse

2.2.1 deconstructivism and building typology

3.0 The Body and Power

3.1.1 Comparing following items: body vs. mind, sex vs. gender, a brick in the wall vs. a brick in the Berlin Wall…

3.2.1 Form and Function are independent from each other.

3.2.2 Form使建築主體的存在的必然、客觀結果,而function是可脫離建築主體的不必然、不客觀因素。因此對form和function的討論,其實就是另壹種形式的對body和power的討論。

4.0 The Elimination of the Body

4.1.1 The Berlin Wall = the total bricks that construct the wall?

4.1.2 The fall of the Berlin Wall = the elimination of every brick in the wall ?

4.2.1 the totality of architecture - power

4.2.2 every architecture + power

4.3.1 權力是否可以脫離主體而存在? 進而使建築脫離presentation/representation獨立成為壹個知識類型或完全依附於presentation/representation成為權力的完美象征?

5.0 Narrative from Lies

5.1.1

他意識到他本人配不上自己的最高理想,那種思想折磨著他的心。

Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment

A curve full of errors shall be excused IV

1.1 film as an integration of “time arts (music/poem and literature/dance)” and “space arts (architecture/drawing/sculpture)”, updated our art system unprecedentedly

1.1.2 for the crowd, the charm of words is far less than visual imagery ( Craik and Tulving’s 1975 processing experiment)

2.1 Literature as an art of language, it has a request of abstract symbols. The acceptance to literature must bear the understanding, the selection, and the organization of words, such that literal/linguistic imagery can be evoked to individuals.

2.2 Literature is different from other forms of arts. While drama, music, photography, sculpture require attention for a period at the most impressive moments, literature takes the role of narration (of durable events especially).

3.1  films also narrate, and are in a better way.

3.2.1 Besides the intuitive interpretation of film narrative, a ten seconds film scene might need Balzac, Dumsa, Flaubert several pages to hundred pages to narrate.

3.2.2 Films provide richer informative connections than literature, such as a face, a voice, a gesture. Imagination build from 1-2 would be much richer from 0-1.

3.2.3 Thus, films are the crisis for literature.

4.1 Marquez and Voiceover [旁白]

4.2.1 One Hundred Years of Solitude: “Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.”

4.2.2 Supplemental 01: Chronicle of a Death Foretold (the storyline and plot)

4.2.3 Supplemental 02: The Autumn of a Patriarch (the sentence structure and paragraph organization)

4.3  Frees literature from film (scenes).

4.3.1 Take the first paragraph of One Hundred Years of Solitude as an example, the past, present, and future are linked together simply in 26 words. Besides space and time的杂糅, there’s also a mixed emotion that varies among people. Such uncertainty elevated film-able reality to a space-time dimension that only exist in human minds and can only be expressed by language (前提:否认Wittgenstein指物定义的思想).

5.0 In today’s world of art, literature is like Eliza in My Fair Lady cannot defeat or even compare to films. Most people write plots to comply with the film's storyline, or simply use words to describe movie scenes. But we should not forget that there are such great narrative schemes that can express things beyond films. As Van Gogh’s painting to photography, as Marquez’s writing to films, we need human emotion and wisdom to narrate in a way the machines are not capable of.

6.0 Thus, “a curve full of errors shall be excused”.本来想take a note写下为什么我觉得Guggenheim的linear circulation is boring的 谁能想到偏题这么多...
